Nixon Nazi - Audience
The "Nixon Nazi" poster is a protest poster from 1970 posted on a college campus. It is clear that the artist's intent was to capture the hearts of any student that saw this poster. The initial sight that is seen is the infamous symbol of the Nazi party from World War II on its signature blaring red background. The use of this symbol was to grab the eye and immediately incite negative feelings such as anger or deep pity. The next element of this poster is what the author put in to spark more thinking on the topic. The element is the appearance of (then) President Nixon's name four times; replacing the four thick inner bands of the original symbol. Considering that the audience would be passing, possibly busy, college students, this layered attempt works in the artist's favor. When walking by this poster, a college student may do a double take, stop to look at the poster, and proceed to take in the poster in its entirety. The artist intent shows in the poster and their delivery was done in an effective way.

I like how you discussed the main goal of the poster, which was to quickly grab the attention of an audience that was likely passing by and not paying much attention. You discussed the elements of the poster which would have been most grabbing, such as the Nazi symbol which would have immediately gotten a student's attention and provoked feelings of anger.
ReplyDeleteI agree that the Nazi symbol does spur many negative emotions. The infamous symbol grabs the attention of everyone and can create initial anger and sadness bringing up the past events of the genocide. I liked how you explained the audience of past college students could also feel these emotions like how college students could today.
ReplyDeleteI agree that the Nazi symbol both elicits attention to the poster as well as provoke negative emotions. This poster must have been especially effective because at the time of its release Nazi Germany was in the recent memories of the american public. Additionally its associations to Nazi Germany links Nixon, in the case of the poster, to many of the negative emotion felt during the atrocities during WWII.
ReplyDeleteI agree with your evaluation that the main goal of the poster was to quickly spur emotions as students passed it by. The poster does not have enough in it for someone to stand there and read it for some time. It is short and clearly conveys the opinion that Nixon is just as bad as the Nazi's were.
