Kairos of UC Berkeley
The exigence of the UC Berkeley committing a protest for Milos Yiannopoulos was due for Yiannopoulo's long history of using racist and offensive behavior and commentary towards religion. For anyone that is unaware of Milos Yiannopoulos, Milos Yiannopoulos is a British commentator, businessman, journalist, and an advocate for the Alt-Right. The kairos of UC Berkeley relies in protesters feeling the urgency to fight back a speaker with objectionable views. California is a state full of Leftists and advocacy for Equality, and it is also commonly a blue state, so the protesters, of course, will not side with guest speaker Yiannopoulos and his hateful rhetoric against people that are not like him. To back up this article, Tina Nguyen, author of Milos Yiannopoulos Is Starting A New Ugly, For-Profit Troll Circus, instills a quote by Yiannopoulos that Milos Inc, a company Yiannopoulos endorses, "would be dedicated to making the lives of journalists, professors, politicians, feminists, Black Lives Matter activists, and other professional victims a living hell." The protesters of California are not supporters of that kind of behavior he stands for, so they effectively fought back.
The kairos of UC Berkeley does not just rely on the necessity to protest against a controversial speaker, kairos relied on the students of UC Berkeley to promote Yiannopoulos in the first place. The Berkeley College Republicans thought it to be the best time to use Yiannopoulos to enforce their side and its controversy. Berkeley College Republicans stated, "We saw the chance to host Milo as an opportunity that was too good to pass up. He is somebody who stands up for those who are too afraid or intimidated to speak out on campus, and he voraciously defends speech on all sides of the political spectrum" (Helsel). The Republicans on that campus thought it was their "opportunity", their fitting time to allow Yiannopoulos to speak for them.
All in all, the kairos relates to both the protesters that fought against Yiannopoulos and the Berkeley College Republicans. The controversial thing that lies between them both is the concept of free speech and the limits that are entailed.
I really appreciate the large amount of background information you provided in your response. It added a lot of needed context and helped me understand why this man needs to be stopped. It’s clear to see that Milo Yiannopoulos is acting as a vehicle of hate and his impact on modern society needs to be diminished as much as possible.
ReplyDeleteUntil this point I knew very little about the UC Berkeley riots as I watch almost no news. The amount of background you put into this post was exceptional, enough to clarify the main points well, but not too much to bore the audience.
ReplyDeleteThank you for informing me about the riots, as I never really paid much attention to them. This definitely helps support future arguments and provides a nice backbone for the rest of the blog.
